The Chapman Chain Engine (1813) was an early steam locomotive developed by William Chapman for use on colliery railways in England. Instead of relying on wheel adhesion, it used a chain drive running between the rails to move the locomotive along the track. Although innovative, the system proved complex and was soon replaced by more practical locomotive designs.
